On January 19^th, 2010,  a special guest came in our class. His name is Sylvain Rivard and he works for ArtsSmarts. He is an Amerindian (Native American). He taught us about art and he surprised me by all the new stuff he taught us.

I will remember how the Natives were painting by crushing red ochre, black, yellow ochre and white rocks that make power and then they used bear fat and mixed it. | I didn’t know that we could actually make paint so easily. I thought that we had to buy it at the store.  |  What I remember from today is that we learned how to draw in Native American art … We actually got to paint the way people did a thousand years ago. It’s super cool. First we take coal that’s black. We crush the coal and make a colour black. So we crack the egg. We take the white water inside and put it on the coal. So after it’s a black liquid paint.  |  … it made paint and it was very smudgy and yucky and it was real paint.  |  Then we painted with our fingers and had to make a story with signs  |  My story was about a man who was hunting and he had caught a buffalo and cooked it on top of a fire and then he went to sleep and then the moon rose.  |  They used those colours because it symbolizes all the different coloured people in the world and they were the easiest rocks to find near them.  |  We learned how to do paint in ancient times with rocks. We learend symbols and how to read art.  |  Language  -  Something that surprised me is that there are only about 25 people in the world that speak his language which is Abenaki.  |  Sylvain Riard is a professional artist.  |  Sylvain showed us a lot of cool things. First he told us about cliffs with painting and engravings.

Then he sang a song at the end with a beautiful drum. |  What would I remember 20 years from now of what Sylvain Rivard showed us? The drum and how in back it symbolizes the four elements. The drum itself symbolizes the world etc.  |  ….. after that he (Sylvain Rivard) played us a song on his drum. That was my favourite part. Here is a story that connects to my life. Last summer I went to Mexico and heard the same drum that the artist played for my class. I love the sound it made. Thanks a lot Sylvain. I hope to see you soon.  |  Another part that was so cool was when he was singing a song with his drums.  |   I learned that to be good at art you need a lot of practice but to be an Artist it’s not only art it’s a job.  |  It was so fun.

What does art mean to each of us?

Art is something nice that people make, draw or paint. Art is for keeping, hanging up or putting in a museum. Humans make art for fun.

Arts is what everyone in the world does. There are all sorts of art. For me art is fun and colourful. Art is made for deoration or ideas for machines or other art. Art is everywhere, for example on floors, on the wall, on tablecloths, on bed blankets…etc.  On t.v. there is a lot of art like cartoons. 

Art is a drawing or painting. It is like a picture. Some artists sit in front of what they are painting to get an idea of what it looks like. There are many different types of art. All artist have different styles. Some humans do art for fun. Others do it for money. I do art because it makes me happy, confident that I can do art and do it good. I love to paint but I also like to draw. I paint all the time. I usually paint animals and people.

There are many different styles of art. Arts is an activity that is useful for making other stuff. One style of art is drawing. I love to draw dogs and wolves and other sorts of animals. Another style of art is painting. I love to paint backgrounds like mountains and stuff. There are mosaic art and realistic arts, or also cartoon art. Also modelling with clay is art too. My favourite type of art is drawing wolves.

Here are some examples of art: the Mona Lisa, Scream. There are many pics in the world. I draw art because I like to invent different things but I like to draw Star Wars realted things like clones, light saber hilts, and the logo.

I think art is for people who like art and they are passioned in art. Art can make you feel good, loose and express your thinkings. I think people like making art because they want to be an artist, or maybe because its their passion to let out their feelings. I think art is something you can do that you can have fun and art can be anything like, painting, sculpting, drawing, playing with shapes, etc. … I love drawing art but in black and white. I don’t like colouring because I find it is not my passion.

Art for me is something you do when you’re bored or if you want to do something quiet or just to have fun. You could do art for a lot of things maybe for fun or money. What I like to draw is Nerf guns. But I only like to invent Nerf guns. Art is really fun because you draw, paint or make what you want because art is something to have fun with.  I think  that art is for everyone in the world.

1.  I think art is an activity to have more imagination and to develop drawing skills. For xample I like to draw cartoon and science fiction things. 2. I think art is to put all our emotions on a piece of paper. for me humans do art because they have to tell something but they can’t.
